A Hotel Life recommends The Exes in My iPod

Jetsetter Amber Gibson explores the world as a food and travel writer. This month at A Hotel Life, she recommends the must dos, must eats and must haves for a trip to Healdsburg wine country, including The Exes in My iPod: A Playlist of the Men Who Rocked Me to Wine Country.

I had the pleasure of meeting Amber through my friend, Healdsburg-based travel writer Matt Villano, last spring when she was staying at Hotel Healdsburg and researching the town’s food and wine scene for future articles. Over cocktails at Spoonbar, the conversation morphed from travel, food and wine to jobs and relationships. The topic of ex-boyfriends came up, and I gave her a copy of my book to read on the flight home. The next day, I received an email from her with a few comments that made my week: “The book is definitely one I couldn’t put down. I meant to get some work done on the plane but couldn’t stop reading!”

D Magazine Q&A with Wine Maven Lisa Mattson

Here’s a fun Q&A that offers some insight into my journey from the cornfields of Kansas to the vineyards of California. This interview coincided with a wine tasting event to promote the first edition of my book, back in its The Exes in My iPod days.

“From drinking Boone’s Farm to sipping a glass of rosé in the heart of Sonoma County wine country, Lisa Mattson has seen — and drank — a bottle or two of everything in the wine industry. Born in southeast Kansas, she ventured to Florida to break out from small town life, to that of sunshine and ocean waves. Fast forward forty-three states, twenty countries, countless road bumps and a handful of dating disasters, Mattson now serves as Director of Marketing and Communication forJordan Vineyard & Winery. Prior to her career in wine marketing and public relations, Mattson was a news editor at Wine News magazine, and after that, she took a stab at winery event planning in California.

So, how could a girl who “thought Chardonnay was just a stripper name, and a corkscrew was our county fair roller coaster” transition to the wine maven she is today?”

Houston Wine & Food Week event appearances

Houston Ladies of the Vine Luncheon_9967

I was thrilled when Constance McDerby, founder of Houston Wine & Food Week, asked me to speak at her popular Ladies of the Vine Luncheon last week. Now in its 11th year, Houston Wine & Food Week is always hosted the first week of June in The Woodlands and features more than 500 wines, 50 restaurants, and legendary wine producers and culinary personalities.

Houston Ladies of the Vine Luncheon_9961Friday’s Ladies of the Vine Luncheon at The Club at Carlton Woods was led by master of ceremonies Charlotte Neuville, The Fashion Chef, who has parlayed a successful thirty-year career in fashion into realizing her dream to create a couture cake design business. In addition to pouring Jordan wines, I also spoke to the nearly 100 attendees about my career in wine and how a redneck girl who grew up drinking Busch and shooting shotguns has ended up working with some of the greatest wineries in the world. Each panelist shared her journey through lighthearted stories that kept the crowd laughing through the afternoon. I was honored to represent women in the wine business alongside Master Sommelier Sarah Floyd of Luli Wines, philanthropist Cindy Sebek of Gracious Gift and vintner Katie Wetzel Murphy of Alexander Valley Vineyards. The surprise of the day was when Constance announced that every single attendee would be receiving a $500 gift certificate from Shannon Fine Jewelry.

Houston HEB Wine Walk Authors Alley_9897I also signed books on Thursday night at the H-E-B Wine Walk event on Market Street. The 34-acre Market Street took on a festival-like atmosphere with guests enjoying wines from around the world, food sampling and demonstrations, as well as live music in the main courtyard.

Stay tuned for details about  my first book chat wine tasting event in Chicago this September.

Thanks again, Constance! You and your staff orchestrated an amazing series of events. I’d also like to thank my friend, wine writer Ron Saikowski, for being such a gracious host throughout my stay in The Woodlands.

Using a collection of ex-boyfriends’ songs, the book follows the dating disasters and pipe dreams of Kansas transplant Harley Aberle, a redneck waitress from the Midwest who blossoms into a refined wine maven during her bewildering struggle to learn the difference between sex and love and the power of self-respect.

About Cellar Rat Wine Merchants: Cellar Rat Wine Merchants was founded in October of 2005 over a handshake and a glass (or several) of Montrachet, and opened its doors in August of 2006. The idea came from owner Kevin Hodge’s shared desire with his co-founders to open a smaller boutique wine shop that focused on selection, service and most importantly, quality.
